‘One Million Jordanian Coders’, an initiative by UAE in Jordan

In line with the UAE-Jordan strategic partnership in government modernization, the ‘One Million Jordanian Coders’ initiative was launched in Amman on May 30th, 2019.

The launch took place under the patronage and presence of His Royal Highness Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, crown prince of Jordan along with the participation of a high-level delegation from the UAE, led by Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Future.

UAE initially has evolved on the tech front with tech-startups in Dubaiexclusive technology-oriented free zones, and Abu Dhabi’s boost to incorporate artificial intelligence.

The initiative in Jordan aims to position it as one of the most advanced countries in the field of coding by providing free coding classes to the youth, enabling them to keep pace with the rapid developments in Computer Science. Hence, equipping them with future skills, increase their capacities and competitiveness in the job market.

‘One Million Jordanian Coders’ seeks to empower Jordanian youth to spearhead the development of its digital economy, thus contributing to bridging the digital gap in the Arab world.

The launch was managed by The Crown Prince Foundation and hosted in partnership with Microsoft, Bayt.com, Facebook, and Udacity Course: One Million Arab Coders.

The launch of an online platform that serves as a virtual home for a community of coders, educators, and experts was witnessed in Amman. The online platform provides successful participants with accredited certificates, e-forums for coding enthusiasts, career portal listings of available coding jobs. Scholarships for excellent students for internationally recognized training programs, free advanced training programs for outstanding students over a six months period and a globally recognized Nanodegree, an equivalent to a BA in Computer Science is also enabled through the online platform. Eng. Mothanna Gharaibeh, Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship of Jordan said that the initiative aligns with their keenness to develop digital knowledge and skills among Jordanian youth. He also mentioned that the accelerated technological advancements in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution have made it imperative for everyone to master digital tools to keep up to date with global developments.

He added that they started the collaborative journey in Jordan two years ago at the initiative of the Crown Prince and in cooperation with the Ministry of Education through teaching program to public school students in a pilot phase in select schools and that now they have reached the planning phase to expand the program to make it more comprehensive.

He concluded by saying that One Million Jordanian Coders, supported by the UAE is one of the several UAE Jordan joint strategic projects.

‘One Million Jordanian Coders’ is an initiative inspired by the One Million Arab Coders, an initiative that was launched in October 2017  by His Highness Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in Dubai.

One million Arab coders aspire to enhance Arab’s contribution to the thriving digital innovation field, boost the morale of the Arab youth and inspire them to invest their talent and energy into modernizing their societies. This Dubai initiative was reported to have gotten more than 1.1 million applicants from all over the Arab world and celebrated its graduation of 22,000 students where His Highness Sheik Mohammed bin Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai honoured 130 graduates out of the top 250 achievers in November 2018.

The program offers 4 tracks.

1. To Become A Full-Stack Web Developer

This program familiarizes the students with some of the most essential skills that full-stack web developers use on a regular basis. One will get a chance to explore fundamental programming concepts in Python like logic checks, data structures as well as learning syntax, debugging techniques and basic problem-solving concepts.

The students also get to learn object-oriented programming through a series of mini-projects and exercises using a variety of Python libraries. The program claims that by the end of this program one will be able to programmatically sending text messages, decoding secret messages and drawing images with Python.

2. To Become An Android App Guru

 This program enables the students to learn how to transform hand-drawn app designs into layouts using the XML markup language and use Views and Viewgroups to display images and text. One will also get to learn how Android handles the touch events and web APIs, basics of networking in Android, including HTTP networking, JSON parsing, and threads.

3. To Become A Front-End Web Expert

This program enables the students to learn in-depth about CSS(Cascading Style Sheets) and HTML. One will also get to learn HTML coding. Students also get to know in-depth instruction to Github and how one can use it.

4. To Become A Data Analyst Specialist

The prerequisite for this is to first develop proficiency in Microsoft Excel and master the skills to make decisions based on the data available. The students then get a chance to learn and explore SQL(Structured Query Language) and will be leveraged to use SQL to extract and analyze the data stored in databases.
