The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) is the Middle East’s largest environmental regulator committed to protecting and enhancing air quality, groundwater, and the biodiversity of Abu Dhabi's desert and marine ecosystems. On 1st October 2019, the EAD published the updated priorities and sub-priorities that would be the aims/goals for making the Environment Vision 2030 a successful governmental campaign. The Environment Vision was developed for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, considering the three main pillars of sustainability, which are – Environmental, Economic, and Social Vision.
Abu Dhabi is the largest Emirate in terms of landmass area and occupies a large portion of the United Arab Emirates. Therefore, it is only suitable that implementing a crucial governmental campaign in this region would help curb many issues and would benefit the UAE as a whole. Abu Dhabi like many of its sibling emirates like Dubai also aims to bring about smart initiatives to improve the lifestyle of the citizens and thus, to live a better life, the government believes that it is essential that the natural wildlife flourishes, air quality improvement, and the water bodies are not polluted by industrial chemical wastage. This will significantly influence the welcoming of new businesses in Abu Dhabi and business setup in UAE.
5 Priority Areas specified by the EAD
The EAD, in its recent study, identified five critical areas where priority and attention were required; thus, the birth of the Environment Vision 2030. A common concern and point of focus that led to the creation of the campaign was the terrifying impacts of climate change. The rising temperatures worldwide and melting of polar ice caps instilled a sense of responsibility to do a needful part to prevent any more damage being caused to the earth. These five priority areas are –
- Climate change - minimizing the impact of climate change
- Clean air and noise pollution - contributing to safe and healthy living conditions.
- Water resources - efficient management and conservation of water resources
- Biodiversity, habitats and cultural heritage - conserved for current and future generations
- Waste management - enhanced value creation through optimized material flows and waste management
It is essential to make sure that the goals are achievable and the campaign is feasible during long term implementation. That's where the sub priorities come in the form of a feasibility plan. A well-devised plan, as such, depicts how valuable the natural resources are for the UAE, and this will significantly influence the positive branding image of businesses in the UAE that support this government initiative. The priority areas are further divided into sub-priorities, which in turn are further divided into environmental outcomes. Each outcome has three values assigned to it:
- Current value - this refers to benefits of the state of the environment in 2010
- Threshold value - this refers to a realistic target to be achieved by 2030
- Sustainability value - this refers to the ultimate desirable target for the state of the environment to be sustainable
Promoting the Triple Bottom Line
The Triple Bottom Line (TBL) is a framework or theory that recommends that companies commit to focusing on social and environmental concerns just as they do on profits. Various campaigns and events in the UAE, such as the Dubai Expo 2020, are already stressing on the importance of sustainability. These government policies have attracted large crowds of investors and businesses to set up business in the UAE. Thus, the UAE has emphasized the TBL framework many times specifying that companies operating in the Arab business market must focus their business on three critical aspects which are – People, Profits, and Planet.
